Cult Of The Lamb Review

Reading Time: 4 minutes

So I never thought I’d want to play a game where I’m a Lamb and also a maniacal cult leader, but here we are. I never thought I’d play a game where you are taking down dungeons all the while leading a cult full of cute creatures to achieve nefarious goals. Yet again here we are. And Honestly I can’t get enough of it.

What is this game:

Cult of the lamb is like a weird blend of the games Moonlighters, Animal crossing, and The Binding of Isaac. That is a mixture that works so well in this case.
Cult of the Lamb might be the most addicting game I’ve played this year. It has this weird supernatural like bind over me, because I can’t stop thinking about my cult and what actions to take next to make sure that my followers are good and me more powerful.

So what is this game and why is it my latest obsession?

Gameplay:

Cult of the Lamb is a 2d rougelite fused with a village simulator game. You play as the Lamb who is the leader of an evil cult that is trying to unleash a dormant God onto the world. You build and craft a village for your cult to grow and thrive, all while going out to take down four dungeons and take down the major boss from each dungeons. Each dungeons will give you resources to help your take care of your followers and make sure that they are feed and in a clean and growing environment. Low-key this is a demonic animal crossing and a fast pace fun rogue like dungeon game.

Let’s talk about how the game plays. The Roguelite gameplay. In each dungeon you start off with a random melee weapon and a range spell at your disposal. These dungeons randomly generated. You select your path and get materials, Followers and upgrades in your journey to the boss. There are a few things I didn’t like with the roguelike side of the game. For starters I didn’t like some of the weapon types. Some feel way more fun to play then others. I wished that all the weapons felt fun to use as opposed to it being a bummer when I got a certain weapon.

Overall though the gameplay is surprisingly simple like Moonlighters and a bit like Hades but it’s so fun to play. On the flip side this game is surprisingly deep as a village simulator. There are lots of ways to build your village. You can create mines and Lumber mills and assign your followers to work for resources, you can create gardens for your followers to gather food, you assign follower to pray at the altar to strengthen you and the village as a whole, and you can decorate the village is tons of ways that you unlock as your progress in the game. The more villagers that you have the more powerful you become.

You have to keep your followers happy though or they will descent and speak out against you. You also have to instruct your followers by giving them jobs and cleaning up after them. As the village grows thankfully your members become more self-sufficient and then all you have to focus on is keeping their faith in you high.
To be honest this game is extremely fun but It did make me uncomfortable. I love it don’t get me wrong but this game rewards you for being evil to your village members. I got too attached to them to do some of the most evil actions to them even though I knew it would make me stronger faster. So I took the slower route and tried to find that nice middle ground. I’m still an ass hole, but I at least have lines that I won’t cross. It is this level of freedom in how you want to rule that makes this game so compelling. You can be as evil as you possibly can be and get insanely powerful quickly or you can still become strong by going a different direction.

Overall/Should You Play Cult of the Lamb:

Cult of the Lamb is absolutely one of the best games I’ve played in 2022. It’s a damn good rouge like game and an even better Village simulator. There are a few things I wished this game did a bit better, but overall this is another banger from Devolver Digital. This game with its demonic vibe and tone won’t be for everyone and that is completely understandable. If that doesn’t bother you then try out this game. Be warned Cult of the Lamb is an experience likely to be your next video game obsession.
