Are you Smarter than A Fifth Grader is a quiz game based on the popular game show. For those who haven’t seen the show here is the premise. As the main character you play as an adult who is put to the test. You answer true or false questions, Multiple-choice questions and other mini games to determine if you are indeed smart than a Fifth Grader. So how is the game overall?
Let’s dive into it.
Gameplay:
This game has two basic modes a Single player and a multiplayer mode. Shout out to the game for having a local multiplayer mode. In both modes the player has to answer 11 questions, two from each grade starting with first grade and working your way up to the fifth grade. After successfully answering the fifth grade questions you have to answer one final six grade question. Answer correctly and you win the game. Just like the show you have the option of using three lifelines. You can copy the answer from a fifth grade kid, see how a group of fifth graders would answer the question, or switch the question out for a new one.
So let’s talk about the questions. The trivia itself is very well done. There is a nice variety to the categories and the questions. All the standard school subjects are here, like Math, Science, Foreign Language, and many more. The trivia aspect of the game works really well.
Flaws:
Let’s talk about the flaws of this game. You have three basic things that you can unlock in the game. The first is skins and outfits for the kids and your desk. The Second is more school subjects that you can choose as categories.  None of these feel like desirable things I want to obtain. Even the additional school subjects seem like something that should be a part of the game and not something you need to unlock.
Another major flaw of this game is that despite releasing in 2022 the game feels outdated. I get it. It’s a simple trivia game, but everything from the animations, graphics, and dialogue felt like it belonged in a game from twenty years ago. If you told me that this was a Wii game I would have easily believed you.
The biggest flaw with this game is the depth. There isn’t enough here to keep you from getting bored quickly. Even those who love trivia games will rapidly tire of the constant switching out of the game show host or the kids dialogue in between questions. There’s the framework of a good game here, but unfortunately the game itself wears thin fast.
Overall/Should You Play Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader:
Overall I’m happy this game exists. There’s an audience for games like this. I glad to see more video game representation in that Local multiplayer space that feels like a dying breed. It’s a shame that the execution was done so poorly. All in all, Are you Smarter Than A 5th Grader is a fun trivia game that becomes stale and boring fast.
