Konosuba is one of my favorite animes of all time. So as you can imagine I had a fair amount of excitement going into doing this KONOSUBA – God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! Love For These Clothes Of Desire review. My love for this IP started years ago. In the wake of Sword Art Online came scores of Ieskai that all wanted to emulate the success of SAO. Many of those anime are forgettable and generic, but then in 2016 came Konosuba.
It’s an anime that planted its flag by doing the opposite of all the repetitive tropes that we were seeing in Ieskai. Instead of an overpowered hero that dominates the world that he gets reincarnated into, Kazuma gets stuck with a party that is full of flaws and has to struggle through each obstacle. The series of unfortunate events combined with the underlying personality traits of the main characters make for a gut-wrenchingly funny anime. Seriously Konosuba is in my humble weeb opinion is the funniest anime of all time. Does that translate into a great video game though?
Let’s dive into it.
Narrative:
Our story starts after the events of Season 2 and the 2019 movie, KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! Legend of Crimson. Once again Kazuma and his party find themselves in another sticky situation where they have to make good on a debt or suffer severe consequences.
In Konosuba: love for these clothes of desire, you play as the lovable shut-in Kazuma. Kazuma’s party discovers a mysterious Black Slab that curses them by switching up their personalities. Each one of the quirks that the Waifus are known for are switched up with some new quirks that are just as funny due to the hilarious and on-point writing that this game has.
The Gameplay:
It is a visual Novel game so the gameplay mostly consists of you clicking through dialogue options. Outside of that you can chose where Kazuma hands out in his spare time and the chores that the party members does to earn money. Let’s be real hear you are not likely playing KONOSUBA- Love For These Clothes Of Desire! for the gameplay. Bask in the debauchery and the story.
Additional Pros:
An aspect that I absolutely adore about this game is the fact that they brought the original voice actors from the anime to reenact their roles in this video game. The voice actors make this feel like more of the anime as opposed to this just being a cheap tie-in.
One pro That’s a game really has going for it is that the choices that you make during your playthrough and the chores that you choose to make the crew do can affect the personalities of the game so in other words you can have several different playthroughs of the main story and see something new each time.
The game’s writing is undisputably superb. It keeps in mind what fans love about the anime and builds upon the lore. Just like watching the anime, I found myself busting out laughing numerous times due to the wild antics of Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness. In a lot of ways it feels like another season of Konosuba.
Cons/Flaws:
A major con of this game is that it doesn’t play well on the Steam Deck at all. The major issue here is that it constantly crashes when you try to play it on the Steam deck.
This is a real shame because the nature of this visual novel-style game would be perfect to play on the go.
Another aspect of this game that leaves a lot to be desired is the core gameplay. As mentioned earlier the gameplay is basically you choosing chores for our heroes to do to earn money for materials for clothes. There’s not even mini games for you to play as it is mostly simulated chores. It is a shame because the storyline is interesting, but the gameplay feels lackluster.
Overall/Should you Play KONOSUBA- Love For These Clothes Of Desire!:
If you are a fan of the anime Konozuba then you should definitely play this game it is legitimately most of the things you love about the show. The characters trying to playfully manipulate each other is so funny. Each one of these lovable characters has their quirks that make you fall in love with them.
The only reason I would recommend you skip this if you’re a Kona superfan is if you absolutely hate visual novels other than that this game is a must-play for anyone who’s looking for more laughs from this all-time great anime.
